Custom Velvet Travel Jewellery Cases

Chung Ngai makes custom velvet travel jewellery cases to order for jewellers, designers and retailers — each one built around the selection of pieces it will hold, finished in velvet in the colour you choose, and marked with your logo. We are a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. This guide covers how a velvet travel jewellery case is built, what to specify, and how to order one made to your brand.

What a velvet travel jewellery case is — and what it has to do

A travel case protects several pieces at once with zipped or clasped closure, ring rolls and padded compartments, so a customer can carry their jewellery safely. It is a strong add-on and gifting product for a jewellery brand.

Velvet inside a travel case is chosen for feel rather than practicality — it is soft on pieces in a bag — so we use it on the ring rolls and lid, and a harder-wearing lining on the compartment walls that take the knocks.

How a velvet travel jewellery case is built inside

Inside a soft or semi-rigid shell, the case is divided into functional zones: a row of ring rolls (padded bars with slots between), one or two open padded compartments for bracelets and pendants, pierced tabs or a card for earrings, and a lidded or elasticated pocket for a necklace so chains do not migrate. The zones are fixed to a stiff base so the case keeps its shape in a bag.

Fit. Ring rolls use the same 2–4 mm slot as a ring box, repeated along a bar; compartment walls are padded so pieces do not knock against each other in transit.

In velvet. Velvet adds pile height on every covered face, so a velvet insert is cut fractionally under size — about half a millimetre on each face — and the pile makes up the difference; a slot cut to the finished width would close too tight once covered. The pads are covered before they are fitted, and the nap is brushed the same way across both pads so the slot reads as one shadow line.

Formats we make: compact zip case · full travel case with lid tray · stackable modular case · ring roll · necklace roll.

Why velvet for travel jewellery cases

Velvet is the material jewellers reach for when a piece needs to feel precious. Its deep, soft pile catches the light and cushions the piece, and it is the finish most customers instinctively read as 'fine jewellery'.

Velvet has a nap — a direction to the pile — so we cut every panel with the nap running the same way; a lid and base cut against each other look like two different colours under shop lighting. Pile also crushes at sharp corners, which is why velvet is wrapped over a firm shell and the insert edges are rounded before covering.

Velvet shows colour more richly than any other lining, but the same dye reads darker in the pile than on a flat swatch — we approve colour on a made-up sample, never on a fabric card alone.

It suits proposal and bridal ranges, coloured gemstones, and any brand that sells on 'the moment the lid opens'.

Two ways to get the size you need

Every box starts with the piece, and the piece decides the shell route:

We will tell you which route fits your brief before quoting, so there are no surprises on tooling or timing.

What we check on every velvet travel jewellery case

Before a sample is sent, and again on every bulk run, each velvet travel jewellery case is checked against the same points — the insert is velvet-covered pads, so the fit checks below are read against that construction:

The most common faults we see in travel jewellery cases bought elsewhere are compartments too shallow for a bangle, a necklace zone without a closure (chains tangle), and a shell that collapses when the case is only half full. Each of those is a specification decision, and we make it with you before the sample.

Made to your brand

Your size, your lining, your colour, your logo. Velvet does not take a crisp hot-stamp the way PU does. For a logo on a velvet exterior we use a metal plate, a woven label or a printed lid card; on a velvet-lined interior the logo normally goes on the inside of the lid on a satin or PU panel. Velvet marks if handled roughly in transit, so bulk shipments are individually poly-bagged and packed lid-up.

You approve a physical sample before bulk, and the bulk order is held to the sample you approved — the same velvet, the same insert, the same logo position.

How ordering works

Send us the selection of pieces dimensions (or the piece itself), the quantity you have in mind, your logo artwork and any colour references. We confirm the shell route and the insert, quote one clear all-in price, and make a pre-production sample for you to approve. Production follows the approved sample. Quantities and lead times are agreed per project rather than fixed, because structure, materials and any tooling decide both.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a velvet travel jewellery case be?

It depends on the selection of pieces. Compact cases run about 100–130 mm square; full travel cases 160–220 mm by 120–160 mm; stackable modular cases are made as a family so they nest. In velvet the finished internal size also depends on the covering — velvet adds pile height on every covered face, so a velvet insert is cut fractionally under size — about half a millimetre on each face — and the pile makes up the difference; a slot cut to the finished width would close too tight once covered. Send us the piece dimensions and we will recommend a size, or check a preferred external size against our ready tooling first.

How is the selection of pieces held inside a velvet travel jewellery case?

With ring rolls, padded compartments, an earring tab and a zipped or elasticated necklace pocket — in this finish, velvet-covered pads. Ring rolls use the same 2–4 mm slot as a ring box, repeated along a bar; compartment walls are padded so pieces do not knock against each other in transit.

Can you make velvet travel jewellery cases with our logo?

Velvet does not take a crisp hot-stamp the way PU does. For a logo on a velvet exterior we use a metal plate, a woven label or a printed lid card; on a velvet-lined interior the logo normally goes on the inside of the lid on a satin or PU panel.

Is velvet the right choice for travel jewellery cases?

Velvet is the material jewellers reach for when a piece needs to feel precious. Its deep, soft pile catches the light and cushions the piece, and it is the finish most customers instinctively read as 'fine jewellery'. It suits proposal and bridal ranges, coloured gemstones, and any brand that sells on 'the moment the lid opens'. Velvet marks if handled roughly in transit, so bulk shipments are individually poly-bagged and packed lid-up.

What is the minimum order for custom velvet travel jewellery cases?

There is no blanket figure. Quantity is agreed per project, based on the structure, the velvet and any tooling involved — tell us the quantity you have in mind and we will quote around it.

Do you make a sample velvet travel jewellery case first?

Yes. We make a physical pre-production sample to your specification, you approve it, and the bulk order is held to that sample. On the velvet sample we check the colour in the pile under shop lighting, that the nap runs one way across lid and base, and that the slot grips the shank without a pinch line.

Can the same travel jewellery case be made in other materials?

Yes — the same travel jewellery case structure can be finished in leatherette (pu), lacquered wood, rigid board, microfibre suede, so a retail range can share one insert and vary the exterior.
