Custom Lacquered Wood Necklace Boxes

Chung Ngai makes custom lacquered wood necklace boxes to order for jewellers, designers and retailers — each one built around the necklace it will hold, finished in lacquered wood in the colour you choose, and marked with your logo. We are a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. This guide covers how a lacquered wood necklace box is built, what to specify, and how to order one made to your brand.

What a lacquered wood necklace box is — and what it has to do

A necklace box lays a chain flat on a padded pad or hooks a pendant so it does not tangle or kink in transit. It is usually longer or deeper than a ring box, and the pad is shaped to the length of chain you sell.

Long lacquered necklace boxes are made to the chain, not to a mould, so a 60 cm opera-length piece can have a box that fits it exactly rather than the nearest standard size.

How a lacquered wood necklace box is built inside

There are two proven structures. A long box (200 mm and up) carries a full-length flat pad; the chain lies in a natural arc and two short slits at the ends hold the clasp and tail so nothing moves. A shorter box uses a hanging board inside the lid: the pendant sits on a hook or clip at the top and the chain falls flat against the board, held at the bottom by two slits.

Fit. Chain slits are cut narrow — about 1–2 mm — so a fine 0.8 mm cable chain is held without being pinched, and the clasp tucks behind the pad edge.

In lacquered wood. Inside a lacquered shell the insert sits in a routed recess rather than against a wrapped wall, so the insert is cut to the recess and the lining is turned into the gap — the lacquered rim stays clean and the pad cannot lift. Shell walls are thicker than a moulded box, which is why a wood box feels heavier for the same internal size.

Formats we make: long flat-pad box · lid hanging board · combination pad with a pendant hook · pearl strand box with a curved channel.

Why lacquered wood for necklace boxes

A lacquered wood box is a keepsake in its own right. The shell is built up in layers and hand-sprayed to a deep, even shine, giving a weight and quality that customers keep long after the sale.

Because a wooden shell is cut rather than moulded, the external dimensions are free — this is the route we recommend when a piece needs a size that no ready tooling matches. Lacquer is applied in several coats with sanding between, so the finish depth and gloss level (high gloss, satin or matte) are part of the specification.

Any lacquer colour can be matched, with piano black, deep burgundy and warm walnut the most requested; interiors are lined in velvet or suede to protect the piece against the hard shell.

It suits higher-value pieces, collectors, watch brands and gifting where the box is expected to be kept and reused.

Two ways to get the size you need

Every box starts with the piece, and the piece decides the shell route:

We will tell you which route fits your brief before quoting, so there are no surprises on tooling or timing.

What we check on every lacquered wood necklace box

Before a sample is sent, and again on every bulk run, each lacquered wood necklace box is checked against the same points — the insert is lined pads set into a routed recess, so the fit checks below are read against that construction:

The most common faults we see in necklace boxes bought elsewhere are a pad too short for the chain (the customer sees a bunched tail), slits cut wide so the chain slides, and a lid that closes onto the clasp. Each of those is a specification decision, and we make it with you before the sample.

Made to your brand

Your size, your lining, your colour, your logo. On lacquer the logo is normally printed or foil-stamped on the lid, or set as a metal plate; a debossed logo is also possible under the lacquer for a subtle 'in the surface' look. Lacquer is durable but shows fingerprints on high gloss — a satin finish is the practical choice for display boxes that are handled daily.

You approve a physical sample before bulk, and the bulk order is held to the sample you approved — the same lacquered wood, the same insert, the same logo position.

How ordering works

Send us the necklace dimensions (or the piece itself), the quantity you have in mind, your logo artwork and any colour references. We confirm the shell route and the insert, quote one clear all-in price, and make a pre-production sample for you to approve. Production follows the approved sample. Quantities and lead times are agreed per project rather than fixed, because structure, materials and any tooling decide both.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a lacquered wood necklace box be?

It depends on the necklace. Flat-pad necklace boxes run from roughly 180 × 60 mm for a 40 cm chain to 240 × 80 mm for longer or heavier pieces; hanging-board boxes are closer to 80–90 mm square and 30–40 mm deep. In lacquered wood the finished internal size also depends on the covering — inside a lacquered shell the insert sits in a routed recess rather than against a wrapped wall, so the insert is cut to the recess and the lining is turned into the gap — the lacquered rim stays clean and the pad cannot lift. Send us the piece dimensions and we will recommend a size, or check a preferred external size against our ready tooling first.

How is the necklace held inside a lacquered wood necklace box?

With a full-length flat pad with slits, or a lid-mounted hanging board with a hook — in this finish, lined pads set into a routed recess. Chain slits are cut narrow — about 1–2 mm — so a fine 0.8 mm cable chain is held without being pinched, and the clasp tucks behind the pad edge.

Can you make lacquered wood necklace boxes with our logo?

On lacquer the logo is normally printed or foil-stamped on the lid, or set as a metal plate; a debossed logo is also possible under the lacquer for a subtle 'in the surface' look.

Is lacquered wood the right choice for necklace boxes?

A lacquered wood box is a keepsake in its own right. The shell is built up in layers and hand-sprayed to a deep, even shine, giving a weight and quality that customers keep long after the sale. It suits higher-value pieces, collectors, watch brands and gifting where the box is expected to be kept and reused. Lacquer is durable but shows fingerprints on high gloss — a satin finish is the practical choice for display boxes that are handled daily.

What is the minimum order for custom lacquered wood necklace boxes?

There is no blanket figure. Quantity is agreed per project, based on the structure, the lacquered wood and any tooling involved — tell us the quantity you have in mind and we will quote around it.

Do you make a sample lacquered wood necklace box first?

Yes. We make a physical pre-production sample to your specification, you approve it, and the bulk order is held to that sample. On the lacquered sample we check the depth and evenness of the lacquer, the hinge action and lid stop, and that the lined insert sits flush in its recess.

Can the same necklace box be made in other materials?

Yes — the same necklace box structure can be finished in velvet, leatherette (pu), rigid board, microfibre suede, so a retail range can share one insert and vary the exterior.
