Custom Rigid Board Pendant Boxes

Chung Ngai makes custom rigid board pendant boxes to order for jewellers, designers and retailers — each one built around the pendant it will hold, finished in rigid board in the colour you choose, and marked with your logo. We are a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. This guide covers how a rigid board pendant box is built, what to specify, and how to order one made to your brand.

What a rigid board pendant box is — and what it has to do

A pendant box centres a single pendant on a padded flap or hook so it hangs the way it will be worn. It presents the piece as the hero, which suits designer and one-of-a-kind work.

A rigid pendant box is often a lift-off-lid cube with a soft-lined hanging board or a recessed pad inside — the print on the wrap does the branding, the lining does the presentation.

How a rigid board pendant box is built inside

The lid carries a vertical hanging board covered in the lining material. A small hook or clip at the top holds the bail; the chain falls straight down against the board and the tail is tucked into two slits near the bottom. The base of the box is a plain pad, sometimes with a shallow recess so the pendant does not knock the shell when the box is closed.

Fit. The hook is sized to the bail — a 3 mm bail needs a smaller, finer hook than a 6 mm enhancer bail — and the chain slits sit close enough together that the two chain runs hang parallel, not splayed.

In rigid board. In a rigid box the insert is glued to the greyboard base and the wrap paper is turned over the top edge, so the insert height is set to finish a few millimetres below the rim and the lid pad closes the gap. Because the board is wrapped, corner build-up is controlled by the paper weight — a heavier art paper needs a mitred corner to sit flat.

Formats we make: hanging-board pendant box · flat-pad pendant box · locket box with a deeper recess · pendant-and-chain combination.

Why rigid board for pendant boxes

A rigid (set-up) board box gives a premium, structured feel at a lighter weight and cost than wood, which makes it the practical choice for retail volume and shipping.

A rigid box is a greyboard shell wrapped in your chosen paper or fabric; board weight, wrap paper and closure decide how it feels. We use a heavier board than folding cartons so the box does not flex, and a magnetic or ribbon closure so it opens with a deliberate action rather than a flap.

The wrap paper sets the colour and texture: textured art papers, soft-touch laminates and metallic papers are all standard, and the same paper can be used across a whole retail range for consistency.

It suits e-commerce brands, multi-store retailers and seasonal or gifting ranges where quantity and shipping cost matter.

Two ways to get the size you need

Every box starts with the piece, and the piece decides the shell route:

We will tell you which route fits your brief before quoting, so there are no surprises on tooling or timing.

What we check on every rigid board pendant box

Before a sample is sent, and again on every bulk run, each rigid board pendant box is checked against the same points — the insert is a lined foam insert glued to the board base, so the fit checks below are read against that construction:

The most common faults we see in pendant boxes bought elsewhere are a hook too large for a fine bail, chain slits set too far apart, and a board that sits at an angle so the pendant swings. Each of those is a specification decision, and we make it with you before the sample.

Made to your brand

Your size, your lining, your colour, your logo. Rigid board takes any print method — foil stamping, spot UV, embossing or full-colour print on the wrap — so it is the most flexible surface for brand artwork, patterns and colour blocking. Rigid boxes stack flat-sided and are the most efficient to ship and store, which is why e-commerce brands packing many orders default to them.

You approve a physical sample before bulk, and the bulk order is held to the sample you approved — the same rigid board, the same insert, the same logo position.

How ordering works

Send us the pendant dimensions (or the piece itself), the quantity you have in mind, your logo artwork and any colour references. We confirm the shell route and the insert, quote one clear all-in price, and make a pre-production sample for you to approve. Production follows the approved sample. Quantities and lead times are agreed per project rather than fixed, because structure, materials and any tooling decide both.

Why Chung Ngai

Chung Ngai is a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. We build and check boxes by hand, quote one transparent price, and hold every bulk run to the approved sample. For rigid board pendant boxes made to your brand, that consistency is what keeps jewellers re-ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a rigid board pendant box be?

It depends on the pendant. Typically 70–90 mm square and 30–45 mm deep; larger statement pendants move to a 100 mm body or to a long necklace box. In rigid board the finished internal size also depends on the covering — in a rigid box the insert is glued to the greyboard base and the wrap paper is turned over the top edge, so the insert height is set to finish a few millimetres below the rim and the lid pad closes the gap. Send us the piece dimensions and we will recommend a size, or check a preferred external size against our ready tooling first.

How is the pendant held inside a rigid board pendant box?

With a lid-mounted hanging board with a bail hook and chain slits — in this finish, a lined foam insert glued to the board base. The hook is sized to the bail — a 3 mm bail needs a smaller, finer hook than a 6 mm enhancer bail — and the chain slits sit close enough together that the two chain runs hang parallel, not splayed.

Can you make rigid board pendant boxes with our logo?

Rigid board takes any print method — foil stamping, spot UV, embossing or full-colour print on the wrap — so it is the most flexible surface for brand artwork, patterns and colour blocking.

Is rigid board the right choice for pendant boxes?

A rigid (set-up) board box gives a premium, structured feel at a lighter weight and cost than wood, which makes it the practical choice for retail volume and shipping. It suits e-commerce brands, multi-store retailers and seasonal or gifting ranges where quantity and shipping cost matter. Rigid boxes stack flat-sided and are the most efficient to ship and store, which is why e-commerce brands packing many orders default to them.

What is the minimum order for custom rigid board pendant boxes?

There is no blanket figure. Quantity is agreed per project, based on the structure, the rigid board and any tooling involved — tell us the quantity you have in mind and we will quote around it.

Do you make a sample rigid board pendant box first?

Yes. We make a physical pre-production sample to your specification, you approve it, and the bulk order is held to that sample. On the rigid sample we check board stiffness, the print and foil against your artwork, corner wraps, and the strength of the magnetic closure.

Can the same pendant box be made in other materials?

Yes — the same pendant box structure can be finished in velvet, leatherette (pu), lacquered wood, microfibre suede, so a retail range can share one insert and vary the exterior.
