Custom Leatherette (PU) Ring Boxes

Chung Ngai makes custom leatherette ring boxes to order for jewellers, designers and retailers — each one built around the ring it will hold, finished in leatherette in the colour you choose, and marked with your logo. We are a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. This guide covers how a leatherette ring box is built, what to specify, and how to order one made to your brand.

What a leatherette ring box is — and what it has to do

A ring box holds a single ring upright in a fitted slot, so the stone faces the customer the moment the lid lifts. It is the box behind proposals, weddings and everyday fine-jewellery sales, which means it carries an outsized emotional weight for its size.

A leatherette ring box is the standard for a branded retail range because the lid takes a crisp foil logo and the boxes match exactly across every production run.

How a leatherette ring box is built inside

The lower half of the cavity is two covered foam pads set side by side, leaving a slot between them. The ring shank drops into that slot with the stone up, so the ring stands vertical and cannot roll. The inside of the lid is a single flat or gently domed pad with no other structure — its job is to stop the ring lifting in transit.

Fit. The slot is normally cut at 2–4 mm and closes slightly under the foam's own spring, so it grips a 1.5 mm wedding band and a 3 mm signet shank without either rattling or forcing.

In leatherette. A PU-covered insert has almost no give, so it is cut to the finished dimension and the covering is turned under and glued flat on the reverse; any excess thickness at a fold shows as a bump under the piece. Where a PU exterior meets a soft lined interior, the join sits inside the lid rim so the customer sees a clean edge.

Formats we make: single-ring · couple / double-slot · flat-slot for stackers · deep-slot for high settings · slim proposal box.

Why leatherette (pu) for ring boxes

Leatherette — a fine PU with a leather-like grain — is the modern jeweller's workhorse: clean, hard-wearing and consistent from box to box. It takes a hot-stamped logo crisply and resists everyday marks.

PU is wrapped and turned over the shell edge, so the corner fold is the quality tell: we mitre and tuck corners rather than bunch them, and use a thinner PU on tight radii so the grain does not stretch and go pale. Grain, gloss level and hand-feel are all specified — a soft-touch matte PU and a saffiano-grain PU behave very differently under a hot-stamp.

PU is colour-stable and matches to Pantone references closely, which makes it the safe choice when several boxes in a range must match across production runs.

It suits branded retail ranges, e-commerce brands shipping many orders, and anyone who needs a crisp foil logo.

Two ways to get the size you need

Every box starts with the piece, and the piece decides the shell route:

We will tell you which route fits your brief before quoting, so there are no surprises on tooling or timing.

What we check on every leatherette ring box

Before a sample is sent, and again on every bulk run, each leatherette ring box is checked against the same points — the insert is PU-wrapped pads with a soft lined slot, so the fit checks below are read against that construction:

The most common faults we see in ring boxes bought elsewhere are a slot cut too wide (the ring leans and the stone faces sideways), a lid pad too thick (it presses on the setting), and a shell so light that the box feels like a sample rather than a purchase. Each of those is a specification decision, and we make it with you before the sample.

Made to your brand

Your size, your lining, your colour, your logo. Leatherette is the best surface for a hot-stamped logo in gold, silver, rose gold or a blind (colourless) deboss. Foil sits cleanly in the grain and holds its edge over years of handling. PU wipes clean and does not fade in a lit window display, so it suits stock that sits on a shop shelf.

You approve a physical sample before bulk, and the bulk order is held to the sample you approved — the same leatherette, the same insert, the same logo position.

How ordering works

Send us the ring dimensions (or the piece itself), the quantity you have in mind, your logo artwork and any colour references. We confirm the shell route and the insert, quote one clear all-in price, and make a pre-production sample for you to approve. Production follows the approved sample. Quantities and lead times are agreed per project rather than fixed, because structure, materials and any tooling decide both.

Why Chung Ngai

Chung Ngai is a manufacturer and supplier of jewellery and watch packaging, Hong Kong owned and managed since 1971. We build and check boxes by hand, quote one transparent price, and hold every bulk run to the approved sample. For leatherette ring boxes made to your brand, that consistency is what keeps jewellers re-ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a leatherette ring box be?

It depends on the ring. Most single ring boxes fall between 50 and 65 mm square, 40–55 mm tall; couple or 'his and hers' boxes use one longer slot or two parallel slots in a wider body. In leatherette the finished internal size also depends on the covering — a pu-covered insert has almost no give, so it is cut to the finished dimension and the covering is turned under and glued flat on the reverse; any excess thickness at a fold shows as a bump under the piece. Send us the piece dimensions and we will recommend a size, or check a preferred external size against our ready tooling first.

How is the ring held inside a leatherette ring box?

With a twin-pad slotted insert that grips the shank and stands the ring up — in this finish, PU-wrapped pads with a soft lined slot. The slot is normally cut at 2–4 mm and closes slightly under the foam's own spring, so it grips a 1.5 mm wedding band and a 3 mm signet shank without either rattling or forcing.

Can you make leatherette ring boxes with our logo?

Leatherette is the best surface for a hot-stamped logo in gold, silver, rose gold or a blind (colourless) deboss. Foil sits cleanly in the grain and holds its edge over years of handling.

Is leatherette the right choice for ring boxes?

Leatherette — a fine PU with a leather-like grain — is the modern jeweller's workhorse: clean, hard-wearing and consistent from box to box. It takes a hot-stamped logo crisply and resists everyday marks. It suits branded retail ranges, e-commerce brands shipping many orders, and anyone who needs a crisp foil logo. PU wipes clean and does not fade in a lit window display, so it suits stock that sits on a shop shelf.

What is the minimum order for custom leatherette ring boxes?

There is no blanket figure. Quantity is agreed per project, based on the structure, the leatherette and any tooling involved — tell us the quantity you have in mind and we will quote around it.

Do you make a sample leatherette ring box first?

Yes. We make a physical pre-production sample to your specification, you approve it, and the bulk order is held to that sample. On the leatherette sample we check the foil logo position and depth, the corner folds, and that the grain and gloss level match the reference swatch.

Can the same ring box be made in other materials?

Yes — the same ring box structure can be finished in velvet, lacquered wood, rigid board, microfibre suede, so a retail range can share one insert and vary the exterior.
